# Seed phrase vs private key: what each one unlocks

> A seed phrase (recovery phrase) is 12 or 24 words that can make thousands of wallets. A private key is one long string that controls exactly one wallet. Back up the phrase and you have every wallet made from it; a key only ever brings back its own.

## The difference in one table

| | Seed phrase | Private key |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Looks like | 12 or 24 ordinary words | About 88 letters and numbers |
| Controls | Every wallet made from it | One wallet |
| Makes new wallets | Yes, as many as you want | No |
| Lose it | Every wallet from it is gone, unless you have the keys | That one wallet is gone |
| Someone sees it | Every wallet from it can be emptied | That one wallet can be emptied |

## How one phrase makes many wallets

A seed phrase is turned into a long number, the seed. Each wallet comes from the seed plus a path, a short list of numbers such as m/44'/501'/0'/0'. Change the third number and you get a different wallet: 0 is the first, 1 the second, and so on, forever. Phantom, Solflare and most Solana wallets add accounts this way.

So the phrase is the master copy. Write it down once and every account made from it can be brought back, as long as the app uses the same path. See [Solana derivation paths explained](/blog/solana-derivation-paths).

## What a private key is

A private key is the secret half of one wallet's key pair, written out in full. It does not come with a path and it cannot make other wallets. You meet private keys when you export one account from a wallet, when a bot or tool makes a wallet for you, or when you import a single wallet somewhere.

## Which one to back up

- **Accounts made in your wallet app**: back up the seed phrase. One backup covers them all.
- **Wallets you imported as keys**: back up each key. The seed phrase does not cover them.
- **Wallets made by trading bots or websites**: these are usually keys. Export and back up each one, or move the money to a wallet you control.

## Keeping both safe

- **Write them down, offline.** Paper or metal, not a screenshot, not a cloud note, not a chat with yourself.
- **Never type them into a website** you reached from a link, a DM, an ad or a "support" person. No real support team asks for them.
- **Split risk.** Keep savings on one phrase you never type anywhere, and everyday or experimental wallets on another.
- **Mind the clipboard.** Copying a key puts it where other apps can read it. Clear it after.

## How Raven does it

Raven holds both kinds side by side: wallets from any number of seed phrases, and wallets imported as keys, all in one list. Everything is locked in your browser with your password (PBKDF2 with 600,000 rounds, then AES-256-GCM) before it is saved. Your 12 words bring every wallet back and let you set a new password, and a new recovery phrase is shown only once, when it is made.

## Questions

### Can I get my seed phrase from a private key?

No. The phrase makes the key, not the other way round.

### Can I get a private key from a seed phrase?

Yes. Any wallet that imports the phrase can show the key for each account it makes.

### Are a recovery phrase and a seed phrase the same?

Yes. Different apps use different names for the same 12 or 24 words.
