# How to set up wallets for trading Solana memecoins safely

> No single wallet is safest for Solana memecoins. Use three: a vault that never connects to anything, a trading wallet holding only what you can lose, and burners for sites you do not trust. Then one bad signature or one hacked bot costs you one wallet, not everything.

## The setup in one table

The best wallet for Solana memecoins is really a setup. Any good app can do the swap. What protects you is how little each wallet can lose.

| Wallet | Holds | Connects to | Lives until |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Vault | Your savings and profits | Nothing, or a site you know well | You stop using crypto |
| Trading | Only what you can lose | Your one or two trading apps | A leak, or you move on |
| Burner | One job's worth | New sites, mints, claims | The job is done |

Solflare's guide suggests the same split: one wallet for staking, another for NFTs, "and a third for trading meme coins". A wallet's transactions, it says, "don't affect any of your other wallets".

## Which app to trade with

Pick on fees and how it holds your keys. Here is what three common choices say on their own pages today.

| App | What it is | Fee on a swap | Worth knowing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Phantom](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/5985106844435-Swap-crypto-in-Phantom) | A wallet | 0.85% on most swaps | Also has a desktop site, [Phantom Terminal](https://help.phantom.com/articles/trade-spot-and-perps-in-phantom-terminal-46527102843027) |
| [Axiom](https://docs.axiom.trade/getting-started/fees/axiom-fees.md) | A trading app with its own wallets | 1%, or 0.95% to 0.75% after cashback | Save its recovery phrase |
| [Jupiter](https://docs.jup.ag/user-docs/trade/swap/risks) | A swap site you connect a wallet to | Check the quote | Ultra Mode has MEV protection, Manual Mode has none |

## Build it in four steps

**1. Make the vault first.** A hardware wallet is the strongest choice. Phantom's [Ledger page](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/4406388670483-How-to-use-Ledger-with-the-Phantom-browser-extension) shows how to add one, and says you still need the device to sign. It also says never to enter your Ledger recovery phrase into Phantom, a website or any app. No hardware wallet? Use a phrase that belongs to the vault alone, written on paper.

**2. Give the trading wallet its own phrase.** This is the step people skip. In Phantom, [creating an account](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/28355057809299-Manage-your-accounts-in-Phantom) "uses an existing recovery phrase". So a second account on your main phrase stops bad signatures from reaching your savings, but it does nothing if the phrase itself leaks. A new phrase or a fresh key does. See [seed phrase vs private key](/blog/seed-phrase-vs-private-key) and [how to create many wallets](/blog/create-many-solana-wallets).

**3. Make burners from fresh keys.** Each one gets only what its job needs. The [burner guide](/blog/solana-burner-wallet) covers what one costs and how to end it.

**4. Fund with the link in mind.** Sending SOL from your vault to your trading wallet ties them together in public. Helius, a Solana data company, offers a [lookup](https://www.helius.dev/docs/wallet-api/funded-by) that returns the address behind a wallet's first SOL transfer, with a name if it is known. That costs you no money by itself, but it shows your vault to anyone watching your trades. An exchange withdrawal removes the direct link on chain, though the exchange still knows. See [is Solana traceable](/blog/is-solana-traceable) and [how to send SOL privately](/blog/send-sol-privately).

## What to keep out of bots and terminals

Telegram trading bots hold your private keys so they can trade for you. Two cases show what that means.

In October 2026, [Cointelegraph reported](https://cointelegraph.com/news/bloom-bot-hackers-953k-faster-popcorn) that $953,000 left 48 wallets belonging to nine Bloom bot users in 94 seconds. Five of those wallets had sat idle on the bot since the first half of 2025. Bloom blamed a flaw in a third-party module, said no keys were accessed, and promised to repay everyone. Bitquery, which reported the drain, said each transfer was signed with the wallet's private key.

In March 2024, [about $523,000 was drained](https://decrypt.co/224371/solana-telegram-trading-bot-shut-down-users-drained-523k) from 302 people. BONKbot's analysis pointed to victims importing their keys into another bot, Solareum, which then shut down. BONKbot said it could not confirm the cause.

So the rules for any bot or terminal:

- **Never import your vault.** Let the app make a new wallet, or give it a wallet made for that app alone.
- **Keep it nearly empty between sessions, and sweep out old wallets.** Those five idle Bloom wallets are the lesson.
- **Keep the app's recovery phrase yourself.** Axiom's [sign up guide](https://docs.axiom.trade/getting-started/signup.md) says you can see it any time in settings, and recommends importing it into a standard wallet so you can always reach your funds. It also says never to share it with anyone.

Use the official address only: [trade.phantom.com](https://trade.phantom.com) for Phantom Terminal and [axiom.trade](https://axiom.trade) for Axiom. A look-alike site can be a [drainer](/blog/solana-wallet-drainers).

## Settings that limit the damage

**Auto-confirm.** Phantom's [auto-confirm](https://help.phantom.com/articles/let-an-app-confirm-transactions-on-your-behalf-19385761078547) lets a supported app submit up to ten transactions a minute for two hours with no prompt. Phantom says it stops and warns you if it sees something suspicious. Use it only on the trading wallet and only for apps you know. Never on the vault.

**Connections and approvals.** [Phantom's help page](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/29995498642195-Connect-Phantom-to-an-app) is clear that disconnecting an app "doesn't revoke token approvals". Disconnect apps you are done with in Settings, Connected Apps. If you think you approved something bad, open the revoke tool from [Phantom's revoke page](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/19142125651731-Revoke-token-approvals), not from a link someone sends you.

**Slippage.** Jupiter's [risk page](https://docs.jup.ag/user-docs/trade/swap/risks) says low tolerance can fail trades and high tolerance can mean worse prices. Ultra Mode sets slippage for you and lowers MEV risk, the risk of bots trading around your swap, but "MEV cannot be fully prevented on any blockchain."

## Check the coin before you buy

A clean wallet setup does not save you from a bad coin. Jupiter lists the main dangers:

- **Copycats.** Anyone can use any name or ticker, so check the contract address.
- **Mint authority.** The creator can make more coins and dilute you.
- **Freeze authority.** The creator can freeze accounts, which can block you from selling.
- **Liquidity.** Creators can pull it at any time, which can leave the coin close to worthless.

Coins on Solana's newer token program can add one more: a [permanent delegate](https://www.solana-program.com/docs/token-2022/extensions), which "can burn or transfer any amount of tokens" from any holder.

Phantom's [scam tools page](https://help.phantom.com/hc/en-us/articles/37416944587795-How-to-Use-Blockchain-Explorers-and-Analytical-Tools-to-Stay-Safe-from-Scams) links RugCheck, Solscan and Solsniffer. Use more than one, and open them from there. Phantom's own words: "No single tool can guarantee safety."

## The routine

1. Top up the trading wallet with what you can lose this week, no more.
2. Use a burner for anything new or unknown.
3. Take profits out to the vault on a set day, not when you feel like it.
4. [Clean up](/blog/clean-up-solana-wallet) dead coins, and end burners when the job is done.

If something goes wrong, [the first hour after a drain](/blog/phantom-wallet-hacked) lists what to do.

## Where Raven fits

Raven holds your Solana wallets in folders, so the trading wallet and its burners sit in one place. One Raven vault holds up to 1,000. Split funds them, Swap trades through Jupiter from one wallet or many at 0.4%, Consolidate brings the money back, and Retire empties a wallet and deletes its key. Some wallets charge less for swaps. Your 12 words bring back every wallet in Raven, so keep long-term savings elsewhere, such as on a hardware wallet. Raven is open to everyone: [open Raven](https://app.ravenwallet.pro/) and make an account.

## Questions

### What is the best wallet for Solana memecoins?

Any well known wallet can trade them, so choose on fees and key handling. The safety comes from the setup: a vault you never connect, plus a separate trading wallet.

### Can I trade memecoins from a Ledger?

You can, since Phantom lets you sign with the device, but you confirm each trade on it. Keep the Ledger as your vault and trade from a hot wallet instead.

### Is a burner the same as a trading wallet?

No. A trading wallet lasts and connects to apps you know. A burner does one job with a site you do not trust, then you empty it and end it.

### How much should a trading wallet hold?

Only what you could lose today without it hurting. Move everything above that to the vault on a set day.
