> Pick an account type or type its size. The rate is read from Solana when you open this page, and every step of the rent cut is shown.

## The formula

Rent is 128 bytes of overhead plus the account's data, times the lamports per byte. There are a billion lamports in a SOL.

**(128 + bytes) x lamports per byte**

A token account has 165 bytes of data, so at today's 5,080 lamports a byte it holds 293 x 5,080 = 1,488,440 lamports, or 0.00148844 SOL. Solana counts this as a deposit, not a fee. It comes back when the account closes.

## What the common accounts cost

| Account | Bytes | Rent at 5,080 a byte |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wallet (system account) | 0 | 0.00065024 SOL |
| Mint | 82 | 0.00106680 SOL |
| Token account | 165 | 0.00148844 SOL |
| Stake account | 200 | 0.00166624 SOL |

## Why the number keeps changing

Rent was 6,960 lamports a byte for years. Under SIMD-0437 Solana is cutting it in steps. Steps 1 and 2 went live in September 2026; steps 3 to 5 are planned but can slip, and the rate can go up again if the network needs it. The calculator reads the live rate from the chain each time, so the page moves when a step goes live.

An account keeps the deposit it opened with. A token account opened before September 2026 still holds 0.00203928 SOL, more than one opened today. See [reclaim rent without closing](/blog/reclaim-rent-without-closing).

## Questions

### How much is rent for a Solana token account?

0.00148844 SOL today, for the standard 165 bytes. Token-2022 accounts with extensions are bigger and cost more.

### Do I pay rent again every year?

No. On Solana today, rent is a one time deposit. An account holding at least the minimum stays open forever, and closing it returns the deposit.

### How do I get rent back?

Close the account. Empty token accounts are the common case, and the [Solana rent checker](/tools/solana-rent-checker) shows how much your wallets could get back.

### Why does a wallet need 0.00065 SOL?

A wallet with nothing but SOL is a system account with 0 bytes of data, so it needs the 128 byte overhead. That is the least a wallet can hold while it has any SOL at all.
