# Make a Solana address that starts with your letters

> Pick up to 6 letters or numbers for the start or end. Your browser tries new keys until one fits. Nothing is sent anywhere.

## How it works

There is no way to choose an address and work out its key. A vanity address is found by luck: make a new key, look at its address, and keep going until one starts or ends with what you asked for.

This page does that in your browser, with libsodium's compiled Ed25519 running on every processor core but one, so the page itself stays smooth. It counts the keys as it goes and stops at the first one that fits.

Letters are matched exactly unless you pick Any case, so RVN and rvn are different asks. A Solana address never contains 0, capital O, capital I or lower case l, so those cannot be asked for.

## How long it takes

The end of an address is even: each character is one of 58, so each one you add makes the search about 58 times longer.

The start is not. An address is a large number written out in base58, and most of them come out 44 characters long, beginning with 1 to 9 or A to J. Only about 1 in 17 addresses can begin with anything else, so a start like R or a lowercase letter is about 17 times rarer than its end-of-address twin. The tool works out the exact odds for your letters before you start.

| Ask | Tries on average | On a recent laptop |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Starts with A | 17 | At once |
| Starts with R | 982 | At once |
| Starts with Ra | 56,961 | Under a second |
| Ends with xyz | 195,112 | About 2 seconds |
| Starts with RVN | 3,303,741 | About 30 seconds |
| Starts with RAVN | 191,616,985 | About 30 minutes |
| Starts with Raven, any case | 347,305,786 | About 50 minutes |
| Ends with raven | 656,356,768 | About 90 minutes |
| Starts with RAVEN | 11,113,785,147 | About a day |

The times assume about 120,000 keys a second, what a recent laptop does with a worker on each of its cores; a big desktop does more, a phone less, and the tool shows your own speed while it runs. Luck matters too: a search can end well before the average or run well past it. Any case finds a fit faster, about twice as fast for each letter that has two spellings. This page goes up to 6 characters. Past 5 a search can take days, and it only runs while the tab is open and the computer stays awake.

## Why this is safe to use

The key is made on your device and the page sends nothing: not the key, not the address, not the letters you typed. Nothing is kept either, so once you leave the page the key exists only in the file you downloaded.

A vanity address is still just a key. Anyone with the private key controls the wallet, and a site that grinds addresses for you on its own servers has seen your key. Make vanity keys only where they are made in front of you, like this page or the command line.

Lookalike addresses are also how address poisoning works: a scammer makes an address with the same first and last characters as yours and hopes you copy it from your history. See [how Solana scams take wallets](/blog/solana-wallet-drainers). Check the whole address before you send, never only the ends.

## How to use it

1. **Download the key.** The CSV holds the address and the private key. The JSON holds the same, plus the key as the list of 64 numbers that a Solana command line keypair file holds.
2. **Import it.** In Phantom, open the avatar menu, then Add Account, Import Private Key, choose Solana and paste the key. See [importing and exporting Phantom private keys](/blog/phantom-private-key-import-export).
3. **Fund it.** The address does not exist on chain until it receives SOL.

## Longer names

For long names a tool on your own computer is faster, because it can use the processor directly and keep going for days. Solana's command line has one: `solana-keygen grind --starts-with RVN:1` finds one address that starts with RVN and writes its keypair to a file. `--ends-with` matches the end, and `--ignore-case` lets RVN match rvn too, which makes the search faster. Check the result with `solana-keygen pubkey` on the file it wrote.

## Questions

### Can I choose any Solana address I want?

No. You can only search for one whose start or end matches, and each extra character takes about 58 times longer. Whole words are out of reach for anyone.

### Is a vanity address less safe?

No. Its key is as random as any other; only the search picked it. It is unsafe only if someone else made the key for you.

### Why are 0, O, I and l not allowed?

Solana addresses are written in base58, which leaves those four out so they cannot be confused with each other.

### Can I use the address in Phantom?

Yes. Import the private key in Phantom like any other key. It becomes one account.
