Solana burner wallet: what it costs, what links it to you, how to end it
A Solana burner wallet is a throwaway wallet you use for risky sites and new coins, so one bad signature cannot reach your savings. It ties up 0.00065 SOL plus 0.00149 SOL per coin, and that comes back when you end it. Funding it straight from your main wallet links the two in public, for good.
What a burner wallet is for
A burner keeps risk away from what you care about. You put in only what one job needs, connect it to the site or coin you are not sure of, and take out what is left. If you sign something bad, a drainer gets the burner and nothing else.
Solflare’s guide says it plainly: use one “for connecting to sites you don’t trust”. It has nothing to do with burning tokens, though search results often mix the two.
What one costs at today’s rent
| Item | SOL | At $97.17 | Comes back? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallet minimum | 0.00065024 | $0.06 | Yes, when the wallet goes to zero |
| Each coin account | 0.00148844 | $0.14 | Yes, when the account closes |
| Base network fee, per signature | 0.000005 | Under $0.001 | No |
| Priority fee | Set by your app | Small, rises when busy | No |
| Swap fee | Set by your app | A share of each trade | No |
Rent read from Solana mainnet with getMinimumBalanceForRentExemption on 30 October 2026, epoch 1072. SOL price from CoinGecko, same day. Coins on the newer token program can need a little more, because their accounts are larger.
So a burner holding five coins ties up 0.00809 SOL, about $0.79, on top of what you trade. You get that back. The real cost of a burner is its network and swap fees. Rent is due to fall again, so re-read these numbers if you find this page later.
Why funding it from your main wallet links them
Every Solana transfer is public: who paid, who got paid, how much and when. A wallet’s first incoming SOL is the easiest clue of all. Helius, a Solana data company, offers an API call that returns who originally funded a wallet “by analyzing its first incoming SOL transfer”, with a name if the funder is known. Anyone can run that check on your burner.
If your main wallet paid for it, the burner is yours in the eyes of anyone who looks. It does not lose you money by itself, but it hands your main wallet to whoever is watching: copy bots, trackers and scammers looking for a bigger target. The same goes for the way back, when a burner sends its profit straight to your main wallet.
Ways to fund it, and what each one does:
| Funded from | What the chain shows | Who still knows |
|---|---|---|
| Your main wallet | A direct link | Everyone |
| A wallet in between | A link one step further back | Anyone who follows one more hop |
| An exchange withdrawal | The exchange’s wallet paid it | The exchange |
| A private route | No direct link | The service that carries it |
See how to send SOL privately for those routes, and is Solana traceable for what can be followed. This is about privacy from strangers. It changes nothing about what you owe a tax office or a court, and we do not cover hiding from them.
Fresh key or phrase?
Bad signatures are not the difference here. A transaction is signed by one wallet’s key, and as Solflare puts it, that does not “affect any of your other wallets”. So a burner is isolated from a bad signature however you made it.
The difference shows up when the phrase or key itself gets out:
| Made from | Its key leaks | Your main phrase leaks | Backup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your main phrase, a new account | Burner lost | Burner and main lost | Covered by the phrase |
| Its own fresh key | Burner lost | Burner safe | Its own copy, or none if it holds little |
| A separate new phrase | That phrase’s wallets lost | Burner safe | One more phrase to keep |
Phantom’s Create New Account “uses an existing recovery phrase”, so a Phantom burner made that way shares your main phrase. A fresh key has one more advantage: delete it and the wallet is gone for good, while a phrase can always remake its wallets. See seed phrase vs private key.
Raven offers all three: fresh keys, your account’s phrase, or a new phrase. A fresh key in Raven still sits in your one vault, so your password or 12 words open it along with the rest.
How a burner ends
A burner left alone keeps its rent and its risk. End it in this order:
- Clear the coins. Sell what is worth more than the fee and burn the rest. See sell or burn Solana dust.
- Close every coin account. Each one returns its rent. See get SOL back from empty token accounts.
- Send out all the SOL. A wallet can hold zero or at least the minimum, nothing in between, so leave no small remainder.
- Delete the key. Phantom says it does not keep imported private keys after you remove the account, so copy any you may still need first.
In Raven, Freeze is the pause and Retire is the end. Freeze stops Raven moving anything out until you unfreeze. It is a lock in the app, not on the chain, so a key that leaked still works elsewhere. Retire does all four steps in one review: it cleans up, sweeps the rest out, reads the wallet back from the chain, and deletes the key only if it is empty. It costs 1% of the rent back from closed accounts, and the sweep is free. A gas wallet lets it reach exactly zero. It will not run on a wallet with staked SOL or a coin frozen by its creator.
Retire sends straight to the wallet you pick, so that link is public too. Choose the wallet with that in mind.
Questions
How much SOL does a burner wallet need?
Enough for the job, plus 0.00065 SOL for the wallet and 0.00149 SOL per coin (30 October 2026), plus fees. Both deposits come back when you end it.
Can a burner wallet be traced to me?
Yes, if it was funded from your wallet, or sends back to it. Funding through an exchange or a private route removes the direct link on chain, though the exchange or service still knows its part.
Should I reuse a burner?
Not for unrelated jobs. Each use adds history that can be tied together, and one bad signature costs whatever is in it. Empty it when the job is done.
Is a burner wallet the same as burning tokens?
No. A burner is a throwaway wallet. Burning destroys coins in an account so that account can be closed.
